International Day against Racism is a “wake-up call” day that rings globally in the consciousness of each of us as individuals and as members of society.
Every year, the 21st of March is celebrated as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. A day of remembrance, awareness, awakening and reflection, which officially established in 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly. Τhe event that gave rise to it as a day against xenophobia and racial discrimination was the death of 70 people in the town of Sharpeville, in South Africa. On March 21st, 1960, during a peaceful protest against the Apartheid laws that the regime had imposed on the country, the police opened fire on the protesters killing them in cold blood.
To this day, in every corner worldwide, the serious violations of human rights, the intense forms of discrimination and the oppression of vulnerable social groups continue to occur.
For these reasons, as members of society we should aim at eliminating any form of inequalities or any other discrimination and promoting solidarity and equal opportunities for every human being, with institutional protection of individual freedoms and dignity.
