Some products are born out of tradition, others out of curiosity. Our Tomato Sauce Oriental with 12 Spices was born out of both.
I still remember watching the film Politiki Kouzina (A Touch of Spice). Growing up in Austria, I had never heard much about the Asia Minor catastrophe, nor about the culinary treasures that came to Greece from Constantinople. The movie was my first introduction to this lost world – where food was more than nourishment, it was philosophy and memory. Curious, I asked my husband to tell me more. One evening, we cooked a tomato sauce filled with warm spices – cinnamon, allspice, cloves, pepper. I fell in love with Politiki cuisine a second time, this time not through cinema, but through taste. That moment became the seed for our very own sauce.
In case you are not aware, when Asia Minor Greeks arrived in Greece after 1922, they brought with them these recipes and flavors. Their traditions mingled with local food culture, giving us many of the dishes we now think of as “Greek classics.”
As I said, for me, this journey started with a film, then continued in my own kitchen, and now lives on in Dolopia’s Tomato Sauce Oriental with 12 Spices. It’s a reminder that food is history, culture, and emotion – all simmered together into something we can taste.
