Meet Maria from The Soaphouse

Maria shares how her studies in Agricultural Sciences and her roots in an olive-producing family inspired her to create natural soap products. Let’s get to know her!

Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you start? What inspired you to get into this line of work?

I come from an olive-growing family in Laconia, and my academic background in Agricultural Sciences at the Agricultural University of Athens was the foundation for pursuing this profession. During my undergraduate studies, I specialized in Biotechnology and later earned a Master’s degree in “Research & Utilization of Natural Products” at the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

I became deeply engaged in the study of medicinal plants—their properties and preparation methods—with a particular focus on oil-based extracts. My inspiration came from my family’s long-standing tradition of making St. John’s Wort oil (known as valsamelo), which we’ve been producing for years.

Tell us about your brand. What does it represent? What was your vision in creating it?

The Soaphouse was created to offer a range of entirely natural, multipurpose personal care products, made without water, preservatives, or synthetic ingredients. It reflects a handmade philosophy, while also striving for low-waste production and sustainable packaging, always respecting both people and the planet.

How did you get started? What challenges did you face?

Starting a business from scratch in Greece—especially without prior entrepreneurial background—comes with many challenges. The biggest ones were navigating bureaucracy, educating the public about natural product alternatives, and sourcing sustainable packaging and rare natural raw materials from domestic suppliers, which are still limited in availability.

Tell us about your products. What makes them unique?

All of our products are handcrafted from start to finish, and each one reflects the personality and care of its creator. They are free from toxic chemicals, preservatives, synthetic foaming agents, and other harmful additives. Our packaging is plastic-free, and we follow a low-waste production model, remaining committed to sustainability and well-being.

What kind of raw materials do you use?

We use only certified, high-quality ingredients, and wherever possible, we source them from Greece. The extra virgin olive oil in our formulas comes from our own family’s groves in Dafni, Laconia. We also craft our own herbal oil infusions, which we use both as standalone products and as key ingredients in our soaps and ointments.

We incorporate raw Greek beeswax, thyme honey, and herbs from small-scale Greek producers. Our range also includes ethically sourced cocoa and shea butters, along with premium plant and essential oils.

Are there any products you would highlight?

One standout product that’s been warmly embraced by our customers is our solid hair soaps. We offer two formulas—one for normal to dry hair and one for oily hair—both created with complex, specialized recipes. These are designed to replace conventional shampoos, providing a natural, plastic-free alternative. They’re among our best-sellers and a project we’re particularly proud of.

Other favorites include our “Repair Face Oil”, suitable for all skin types, and our Lip Balm, available in six natural flavors, which deeply nourishes and keeps customers coming back again and again.

Can you share some tips or creative uses for your products?

Our products aφ multi-functional. For example, facial soaps can also be used on the body, and the same goes for hair soaps. For those using hair soaps, we recommend an apple cider vinegar rinse at the end of washing—this removes any residue, restores scalp pH, and works as a natural hair conditioner.

We also suggest using facial oils on damp skin for better absorption. As for our lip balm, it can double as a healing salve for dry patches beyond the lips.

Can Greek producers make a difference during times of crisis?

Absolutely, and I believe they already are. Greece is a land rich in high-quality natural resources and ideal conditions for both primary and secondary production. With the right support and infrastructure from the state, Greek products could be promoted more effectively—especially in international markets.

Why did you choose to support and participate in the Wise Greece Initiative?

At The Soaphouse, we genuinely love sharing and giving back however we can. We believe that solidarity is the most powerful tool for change. Wise Greece carries out incredibly meaningful work with real social impact. As consumers, we already choose products with their label whenever possible—because that’s one small way we can help.

Being part of Wise Greece means that our products contribute to offering food and essentials to those in need—and that’s not only why we joined, but a real honor for us. We hope Wise Greece continues to grow and spread smiles to producers and people alike.
