Meet Avraam from ANTONIO FOODS

Tell us a few words about yourself. How did you start? What inspired you to get involved in food production?

ANTONIO FOODS is a family-owned business with a history of more than fifty years in the processing of nuts and food products. Together with my brother, we represent the second generation, taking over from our father—the founder of the company. So, continuing the business came naturally to us—it was almost self-evident, I would say.

Tell us about your brand. What does it stand for? What was your purpose in creating it?

Our main goal is to highlight the hidden treasures of the Greek land. I would describe our work as a blend of tradition and innovation: we preserve the love and passion of the older generations, while at the same time striving to evolve—listening to the demands of modern times. That means a consistent focus on high quality, environmental responsibility, and the need for growth to benefit not only ourselves but society at large. Supporting initiatives like Wise Greece is one such way to give back.

How did you begin, and what challenges did you face?

The driving factors were mainly external—consumer preferences changing, shifts in lifestyle, and more. We faced several challenges early on, similar to those of many others: uncertainty, insecurity, and the difficult economic climate.

Tell us about your products. What makes them unique?

Thanks to our deep specialization, we are the only company in the Greek market that processes and offers hulled Greek pumpkin seeds (passatempo) and sunflower seeds. The seed varieties grown in Greece are truly unique—not only for their flavor, but also for their nutritional value.

According to a dedicated study carried out for us by the Department of Food Technology at the University of Thessaloniki, Greek pumpkin seeds were found to have the highest content of proteins, dietary fiber, and unsaturated (healthy) fatty acids.

Tell us about your raw materials.

We use only Greek raw materials, sourced exclusively from local farmers with whom we’ve built long-standing relationships. This allows us to control the entire process—from cultivation in the fields all the way to the final product delivered to the consumer.

Are there any products you personally highlight?

I honestly couldn’t pick just one—it really comes down to personal taste. Whether it’s the roasted, unsalted seed kernels as a salad topping, the salted or tomato & oregano flavors as a tasty snack, or even the sunflower seed spread with cocoa and honey as a delicious and healthy alternative to commercial chocolate spreads—all are truly special in their own way!

Can you share some creative uses for your products? Recipes or tips beyond the usual?

  • Sunflower or pumpkin seed kernels can be blended with fruit for a fantastic smoothie.

  • Pumpkin seed paste makes a wonderful base for homemade ice cream.

  • Savory sunflower seed paste is an excellent dip for crackers, a tasty sauce for meats, or pairs beautifully with tomato jam.
    The possibilities are endless!

Can Greek producers make a difference during a crisis?

Absolutely. The quality of Greek food is outstanding. I’m convinced that Greek producers can truly make a difference. It just takes dedication, hard work, and selflessness.

Why did you choose to participate in and support the Wise Greece Movement?

I believe that all businesses—big or small—should share the benefits of their operation with society, not just pursue profit. Wise Greece, a non-profit organization, is an admirable initiative that aligns with this belief. That’s why we chose to be a part of it.
